About Our Farm
When my husband and I moved here in 2015, we came to retire and get away from the crowding, the traffic, and the bustling state of California. My parents had already been here for almost 15 years. When we would visit, we so enjoyed the peace and quiet of this little rural area with open land and roaming cows and horses surrounded by mountains. We had raised our five children, who now are all adults and busy with their lives. We were so looking forward to doing pretty much nothing, except enjoying time with my parents as they approached their 90’s, and having our children and friends visit.
We bought a home with land on almost 2 acres, with a 4-stall lean-to, with 2 pastures, sectioned off with fencing. It seemed like so much land. Now, my husband comes from an Italian family and they always had fabulously huge vegetable gardens. Every year raising our children we also had a wonderful vegetable garden as well as colorful flowers all around the yard. So, after we bought our new home here, we of course started a vegetable garden. The Food Closet in Gardnerville also benefits from the fruits of that labor. We have even tried raising chickens. And of course, we were trying to grow flowers for our yard. I had even tried my hand at starting them from seed. Ha – Ha! We were finding out fast – this is NOT California and growing vegetables and flowers here is very different. However, we were willing to learn. Having had 5 children helps prepare you to be adaptive.
But I kept looking at those pastures of ours out back wondering what could I do with them. I certainly WASN’T going to raise horses. I was getting restless and tired of doing nothing, which filled me with a creeping feeling of boredom. I am just not one for sitting still. Not yet anyway.
One thing my husband and I enjoyed doing throughout our life together, was going to the farmers market whenever we could. Sadly, we noticed that the Gardnerville farmers market had no flower vendors.
One morning, at the end of summer 2018 - as we were sitting outside at the little drive-by coffee shop in Gardnerville looking up at the distant mountains all around us - I had an inspiration! I knew what I was going to do with those pastures… grow flowers for the Gardnerville - Minden Farmers Market!
What an endeavor this has been and continues to be.
So, here we are. I guess we aren’t retired yet! This is our story so far. We are Bunches and Bunches Flower Farm in lovely Gardnerville, Nevada. For me, flowers are therapy (along with an incredible amount of work). Who doesn’t smile when you give them a bunch of flowers (or when you buy them for yourself)!!?? And if I can make myself or someone else smile, well, that’s such a gift!
Thank you for your interest in our flower farm and we hope to meet you soon.
